From "On AI" to Also "With AI"
Artificial intelligence’s breathtaking advances rightly captivate us. As Microsoft’s Satya Nadella observed, in just three years AI has evolved from a simple tool that answers questions and completes simple tasks to a constant intellectual companion with the knowledge of over many PhDs. With a well-funded arms race among tech giants, this progress is only set to accelerate.
Yet, focusing on those working “On AI” is not enough to unlock its enormous potential. That also requires diffusion—ensuring that more individuals, companies, and countries can effectively work “With AI.”
Achieving this is a critical joint responsibility. Critical, because failure risks not only undermining economic wellbeing and fueling political and social opposition; it would also unleash those characteristics of AI that exacerbate inequality. Joint, because it demands simultaneous involvement across society.
Individuals need to upgrade their ability to interact with AI. Companies must resist focusing solely on “labor displacement,” eagerly embracing its “labor enhancement” potential too. Leading AI firms must do more to safeguard against “bad actors” weaponizing the technology, and governments need to agree on basic standards and regulations.
By all means, let’s remain fascinated by the work of those building AI. But we must also address the challenges of working with AI. Our economic well-being—and a less unequal and divided society—depends on it.
I believe corporate America is focused on Productivity gains via Labor replacement by Adopting AI. They are candid about it. After all, the management bonuses, promotions, stock value depends upon how much profit they can generate. It will come back to haunt them, as people’s purchasing power is diminished, they will lose sales. The biggest unknown in AI Adaptation is how much productivity gains the corporations can expect. USA is ahead of Europe, India, Brazil and most probably China in adopting AI, however, Trade Restrictions imposed by #Trump is hindering their access to foreign market.
My personal view is that too many confuse knowledge with intelligence.
Knowledge is now available everywhere but in itself does not create any meaningful outcome.
Intelligence, instead, is about using the knowledge we all have to drive outcome.
AI can significantly increase our ability to drive outcomes but AI will not drive outcomes.
I have recently written an article comparing AI to new electricity. However, we all know that electricity becomes useful only with a grid.
My grid is the High Valuation Triangle and I welcome comments on how other are using AI to drive positive outcomes.
